Ayagu, originating from Maekawa in the Tamagusuku district, is a male danceinvolving the valiant figure of a young boy from a farming village. The men wear purple headbands during their dance. Some say that the dance is an interpretation of young men testing theirstrength against each other, but others say it represents how cooperationis the most important for the development of a farming village. Maekawa's Ayagu is designated as an intangible ethnic cultural asset of Nanjo City.
