Shundou is the only form of Ryukyu classical dance in which masks are worn during the performance. The dance is divided into two groups: one oftwo beautiful women and one of two ugly women.The beautiful pair boasts of their good looks, whilethe ugly pair boasts of their chastity. The ugly pair's masks and humorous movementsmake for a comical display. Shikenbaru's Shundou has been famous from sincebefore World War II, at which time people from neighboringvillages would rush over to watch the shows.
