Bojutsu (lit. staff technique) has been passed down in Tsuhako, an area found in the Sashiki district, for generations. Bojutsu is an ancient martial art that uses a bo, or staff, in its practice. Bojutsu is said to have begun during the age of the Ryukyu kingdom,where it was practiced by the warrior class and bureaucrats of the time.From there it spread widely among the general population. Bojutsu remains a popular martial art with the youth of the region still today, due to the valiance of its performance. Tsuhako's bojutsu has been designated as an intangible cultural asset of Nanjo City.
