The ruins of Tamagusuku in the Tamagusuku district. Tamagusuku is said to have been built by the creator of the Ryukyus, AMAMIKIYO. It is located on a hill overlooking Kudaka Island and the south-central area of Okinawa's main island. The castle originally consisted of three levels. However, after the war, most of the castle was taken away by the American army to be used as building materials and so very little remains of the original shape. In 1987, the ruins of Tamagusuku were designated as a national historic site.
