Maebaru's Sekichou Mayoke Shiishi is locatedin the Oozato district. The statue is made of Ryukyu limestone, andmeasures 90 centimeters tall and 130 cm around. Okinawa has long had a tradition of using shiishi asitems to ward off evil spirits, but the Sekichou MayokeShiishi in particular is a very valuable material for thestudy of folklore and as such was designated as a tangibleethnic cultural asset in 1983.
